Chapter Five

“Oh, so you remembered then.”

“I’m sorry, Gran.” I couldn’t see her face as she was stood at the sink as I entered, but I could tell she was angry from the straightness of her back and the tightness of her shoulders.

“I’m too old to be doing this, Kyle. Why didn’t you ring me?”

“I should have done but my battery died and I—”

“Oh, don’t lie to me. I brought you up better than that.”

She turned then, anger in her dark-ringed eyes. She looked so frail.

“I was up all night worrying over you. Almost called the police several times, but I thought they’d not hear me out. I was frantic, Kyle.”

“Oh, Gran, I really didn’t think. It was important, though.”

“I am sure you thought it was. A woman, no doubt.”

“Gran, not just a woman.” I smiled. “The woman I love.”

“Love, eh?” she replied with a sigh and a shake of her head. “It addles your brain, that stuff.”

“I know and I promise not to be so irresponsible again.”

“You better not be, lad. I’m too old for all-nighters.”

“Go and rest now, Gran, I’m home. I’ll cook tonight. I’ll make your favorite.”

“Oh, I won’t say no to you cooking, love, but I’m not going to sleep now, no fear. I want details. Tell me all about the love of your life!”

One of the brilliant things about my gran is that her temper may be fierce but it is also short. It was so good to finally talk about Janine with her. Okay, so I had to leave some details out and I only told her I’d kissed Sharon, I couldn’t confess to more, but I did tell her most of the other stuff—without vamp-specific details, though, obviously.

“Just be careful, love. Don’t give your heart away cheaply, okay? I want you to have a good woman to look after you. I won’t always be here to do it.”

“Oh, Gran, she’s great. You’ll love her. I’ll bring her to meet you soon, promise.”

“All right, that’ll be lovely. I think I’ll have that nap now, love, now I’ve got all the details.”
